The new Musée du Quai Branly in Paris
The Ateliers Jean Nouvel on the banks of the Seine
   1. THE ARCHITECTURE
1. The new Musée du Quai Branly in Paris
Thirty years after the Centre Pompidou and twenty after the Musée d'Orsay, a new large exhibition space has been opened in the French capital: the Quai Branly Museum (37, quai Branly; 75007 Paris; www.quaibranly.fr), the world’s most important exhibition dedicated to the primitive arts and civilization of Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. Divided into the four great geographical areas, the permanent collection features about 300,000 pieces of which 3,500 will be exhibited permanently.

The project is of Ateliers Jean Nouvel, Grand Prix d'Architecture in 1987, that in Paris has also created the Institute of the Arab World and the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art. Wanted, supported and inaugurated last June by President Jacques Chirac, to the presence of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, the museum consists of four bodies and one green area for a total surface of 39,000 m2 (including gardens, offices and exhibition areas) and is enhanced by the original natural external covering, designed by Patrick Blanc and consisting of a 800 m2 of vegetal wall with 15,000 plants of 150 different species coming from Japan, China, Central Europe and the United States.

The interior space for exhibitions, supported by the media library and a reading room, is completed with the outdoor theatre (which includes music and dance programs, connected to the ongoing events) and the restaurant on the roof terrace (from which can be seen the Seine and nearby Eiffel Tower), intended to become a favourite destination for Parisians and tourists.
